Why You Should Stop Taking Tennis Balls to the Dog Beach

Why You Should Stop Taking Tennis Balls to the Dog Beach

If you live near the Space Coast, a weekend trip to the dog beach is a way of life! And while the default beach toy for most dog owners is a standard yellow tennis ball, it is actually one of the worst things you can throw into the ocean.

Here is why tennis balls and the beach don’t mix:

  1. They absorb saltwater: Once a tennis ball gets waterlogged, it becomes heavy and sinks below the waves, leading to lost toys and a frustrated dog.

  2. They trap sand: The fuzzy felt on a tennis ball acts like velcro for wet sand. When your dog chews on it, that sand acts like sandpaper, grinding down their tooth enamel over time.

  3. They are a choking hazard: A heavy, wet tennis ball can easily slip to the back of a wet dog’s throat.

The Solution: Upgrade to High-Visibility Floaties

For safe, stress-free water play, your dog needs a toy specifically designed for the elements.

Our favorite upgrade for the summer is the fabdog® Floatie Squid.

Made from heavy-duty neoprene (the exact same material used in human wetsuits), this squid is designed to float effortlessly on top of the waves. Its bright orange color makes it easy for your dog to spot from the shoreline, ensuring you never lose a toy to the tide again.

Plus, the long tentacles are made from recycled rope, which is perfect for a friendly game of tug-of-war on the sand—without trapping the grit!

Before you load up the car for your next beach day, swap the tennis ball for a safer, squeakier option.
